Arrowtown Travel Guide 2026: Things To Do, Where to Eat & How to Get There

New Zealand's best-preserved gold rush town — 20 minutes from Queenstown

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Arrowtown is 21km from Queenstown — a 20-minute drive that feels like stepping back 150 years. This beautifully preserved gold rush town on the Arrow River is one of the most photogenic places in New Zealand, and one of the most underrated stops on any South Island itinerary.

Why Visit Arrowtown?

In autumn (April–May), the tree-lined main street turns gold and red — it's one of the most photographed scenes in New Zealand, and it genuinely lives up to the photos. But Arrowtown is excellent year-round:

  • Heritage architecture — Buckingham Street is lined with original stone cottages from the 1860s
  • Chinese Settlement — one of the most significant Chinese heritage sites in NZ, right on the riverbank
  • Excellent food — better restaurant-to-resident ratio than almost anywhere in NZ
  • Arrow River walking — beautiful riverside trails in both directions
  • Proximity — 20 minutes from Queenstown, easy half-day trip

Things To Do in Arrowtown

Buckingham Street

The main street is a heritage precinct — stone buildings, independent boutiques, galleries, and cafes. It's the kind of main street that makes you slow down. Allow an hour just to walk it properly.

The Chinese Settlement

On the banks of the Arrow River, just behind the main street, is the restored Chinese Settlement — a collection of small stone huts where Chinese gold miners lived in the 1860s. It's a free, evocative, and genuinely moving heritage site. Information boards tell the stories of individuals who came to NZ seeking fortune and faced extraordinary hardship.

Allow 30–45 minutes. Don't skip it.

Lakes District Museum

The Lakes District Museum on Buckingham Street covers the gold rush era, Chinese settlement, and early Otago history. Well curated and good value. Adults $10, children free. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Arrow River Walks

The Arrow River walkway extends in both directions from town. Upstream, you can walk to the Bush Creek junction and back (30–45 minutes return, easy). The river is beautiful — clear water, willows, old mining relics.

For a longer walk: the Arrowtown–Lake Hayes trail is 8km one way and passes through stunning pastoral scenery. Easy, flat, and excellent in autumn.

Millbrook Resort Golf

For golfers: Millbrook Resort just outside Arrowtown has one of New Zealand's best golf courses, set against a stunning mountain backdrop. Visitor green fees from $195. Book in advance.

Where to Eat in Arrowtown

Provisions of Arrowtown

The best café in town — possibly the best café in the Queenstown region. Outstanding coffee, excellent cabinet food, and a beautiful stone cottage setting. Queue expected on weekends.

The Fork and Tap

Best pub lunch in Arrowtown. Good selection of NZ craft beer, hearty food, and a garden that catches the afternoon sun. Very popular — get there early.

Saffron Restaurant

Arrowtown's fine dining option. Mediterranean-influenced menu in a heritage building. Excellent wine list. Good for a special occasion dinner. Booking essential.

La Rumbla

Spanish tapas bar with excellent cocktails. Good for a pre-dinner drink or a lighter meal.

The Arrowtown Autumn Festival

The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is held in the third week of April — usually the peak of the autumn colour. It's one of the best events on the South Island calendar:

  • Markets and stalls along the main street
  • Heritage walks and tours
  • Live music
  • Wine and food tastings
  • Incredible autumn foliage backdrop

If you're visiting in April, try to plan around the festival. Accommodation books up fast — plan ahead.

Arrowtown + Gibbston Valley Combo

Arrowtown and Gibbston Valley wine country are on the same road from Queenstown — making them a natural half-day or full-day combination:

  • Drive out via Gibbston Valley — stop at 1–2 wineries for tastings
  • Continue to Arrowtown for lunch and exploration
  • Drive back via the Arrowtown Loop Road and Lake Hayes

This is one of the best day trips from Queenstown — excellent food, wine, heritage, and scenery without needing to cover huge distances.
