Auckland to Queenstown: Flight, Drive or Train? (2026 Guide)

The best ways to get from Auckland to Queenstown — with prices, times, and honest advice

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Auckland to Queenstown is the most common long-distance journey in New Zealand tourism. It's how most international visitors get from the North Island to the South Island's adventure capital. Here are all your options.

Option 1: Fly (The Obvious Choice)

The fastest and most popular option. Multiple airlines fly Auckland to Queenstown daily.

Airlines: - Air New Zealand — the main carrier, 5–8 flights daily - Jetstar — budget option, 3–4 flights daily

Flight time: 1 hour 50 minutes

Price: Varies enormously by season and advance purchase - Budget (Jetstar, advance booking): NZD $79–$150 - Mid-range (Air NZ): NZD $150–$350 - Last-minute / peak season: NZD $400–$600+

Book through: airnewzealand.co.nz or jetstar.com. Also check Google Flights for comparisons.

Practical notes: - Queenstown Airport is small and efficient — 15 minutes from town - Auckland Airport has two terminals (domestic and international) connected by a 10-minute walk/shuttle - Bag fees on Jetstar add cost — factor in if you're checking luggage

Verdict: For most travellers, flying is the right choice. It's fast, the price is reasonable if booked in advance, and it allows you to spend more time in Queenstown.

Option 2: Drive (For Road Trippers)

Driving Auckland to Queenstown is a significant undertaking — 1,480km via the most direct route — but it's also one of the great New Zealand road trips if you take your time.

Direct route: Auckland → Hamilton → Taupo → Wellington (ferry) → Picton → Christchurch → Queenstown

Total distance: ~1,480km (including the Cook Strait ferry) Driving time: 15–18 hours (excluding ferry) — realistically 3–5 days Ferry: Interislander or Bluebridge, Wellington to Picton, 3.5 hours. From NZD $80 per person + vehicle.

Highlights along the way: - Taupo: Lake Taupo and Huka Falls - Rotorua: Geothermal wonders (1 hour off-route) - Wellington: New Zealand's capital, excellent food scene - Kaikōura: Whale watching and seal colonies - Christchurch: Post-earthquake city with outstanding food - Mount Cook: New Zealand's highest peak (add 2 hours) - Lake Tekapo: Turquoise lake, Church of the Good Shepherd

Verdict: Only worth it if you plan to stop and explore. Driving straight through is not worth it — the ferry crossing adds time and cost, and the direct route misses most of the scenery. If you want the full New Zealand experience and have 10+ days, this is extraordinary. Otherwise, fly.

Option 3: Bus (Budget Option)

InterCity coaches connect Auckland to Queenstown via a network of routes. Not fast, but cheap.

Total journey time: 18–24 hours (with stops and connections) Price: From NZD $80–$150 (booked in advance) Operators: InterCity, Naked Bus (if still operating)

Verdict: Only makes sense for backpackers on very tight budgets who enjoy bus travel and have plenty of time. For most visitors, the time cost outweighs the savings.

Option 4: Scenic Train + Ferry + Train

New Zealand doesn't have a direct rail connection, but a scenic combination is possible:

  • Northern Explorer: Auckland → Wellington (weekly service, $119–$189, 12 hours)
  • Interislander ferry: Wellington → Picton (3.5 hours, from $80)
  • TranzAlpine: Christchurch → Greymouth (4 hours, $119–$199, stunning scenery)
  • Bus or rental: Greymouth → Queenstown (5 hours)

Total time: 3–4 days Total cost: NZD $400–$700 per person

Verdict: Not practical as a transfer — but extraordinary as an experience if you specifically want to travel by train. The TranzAlpine over the Southern Alps is one of the world's great train journeys.

What Most Visitors Do

For a 2-week NZ holiday: Fly into Auckland, spend 2–3 days in the North Island (Rotorua, Hobbiton, Bay of Islands), fly to Queenstown, explore the South Island, fly home from Queenstown or Christchurch.

For a South Island-only trip: Fly directly to Queenstown (many airlines fly direct from Australian cities). You don't need to go to Auckland at all.

For the full overland experience: Drive or take the bus/train combination — but allow 3+ days and plan your stops.
