The Best Day Trips from Queenstown (2026 Guide)

Milford Sound, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Lake Tekapo and beyond — ranked

14 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown's central location in the South Island makes it one of the best bases for day trips in New Zealand. Within a half-day's drive you can reach fiords, glaciers, wine country, alpine lakes, and gold-rush towns.

Here are the 8 best day trips from Queenstown, ranked.

1. Milford Sound (The Best Day Trip in New Zealand)

Distance: 290km / 4.5 hours each way Difficulty: Easy (guided coach tour or self-drive) Best for: Everyone — it's genuinely unmissable

Milford Sound is consistently rated one of the top 10 natural wonders in the world, and with good reason. The fiord — 15km of sheer cliff walls, waterfalls, and mountains — is extraordinary in any weather. Rain actually makes it better, adding dozens of temporary waterfalls.

The standard day trip (coach from Queenstown + 2-hour cruise on the fiord) takes 10–12 hours total. Long, but worth every minute.

Options: - Coach + cruise: $200–$260 NZD - Scenic flight + cruise: $600–$900 NZD - Self-drive: $50 fuel + $85 cruise

2. Glenorchy & Paradise (The Lord of the Rings Trip)

Distance: 45km / 45 minutes each way Difficulty: Easy (sealed road to Glenorchy; 4WD for Paradise) Best for: Scenery lovers, LOTR fans, hikers

The Glenorchy Road is one of the most spectacular drives in New Zealand — sealed all the way, following the western shore of Lake Wakatipu with mountain views the entire way. Glenorchy itself is tiny but has a great café and access to some of the South Island's best walks (Routeburn, Rees-Dart).

Beyond Glenorchy, the Paradise Road leads into Tolkien's Middle-earth filming locations.

Cost: Free to drive; guided LOTR tours from $189 NZD

---

3. Arrowtown (The Gold Rush Town)

Distance: 21km / 20 minutes each way Difficulty: Easy (sealed road, free parking) Best for: History buffs, families, food lovers, autumn visitors

Arrowtown is a beautifully preserved gold-rush town 20 minutes from Queenstown. The main street has excellent cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops. The Chinese Settlement on the riverbank is one of the best heritage sites in the South Island.

In autumn (April–May), the avenue of trees on Buckingham Street turns gold and red — one of the most photographed scenes in New Zealand.

Cost: Free (museum is $10, everything else is free)

---

4. Wanaka (The Quieter Alternative)

Distance: 70km / 1 hour via Crown Range, 115km via Cromwell Difficulty: Easy (Crown Range route is steep but sealed) Best for: Those seeking a slower pace, families, art and food lovers

Wanaka is Queenstown's quieter sibling — a lakeside town with excellent restaurants, the famous Wanaka Tree (a lone willow growing from the lake), and access to Mount Aspiring National Park. The Crown Range road connecting the two is New Zealand's highest sealed road with spectacular views over the Cardrona Valley.

Activities: Lake swimming, Roys Peak track, Puzzling World, Mount Aspiring trailheads, wine tasting

Cost: Free to explore; activities from $30

---

5. Lake Tekapo (The Stargazing Town)

Distance: 225km / 2.5 hours Difficulty: Easy (SH8, all sealed) Best for: Photographers, stargazers, those en route to/from Christchurch

Lake Tekapo's famous turquoise water comes from glacial flour suspended in the lake — it's not photoshopped. The Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakefront is one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings. Mount John Observatory offers the best stargazing in New Zealand (International Dark Sky Reserve).

Best time to visit: Morning for calm reflections; night for stars (the Dark Sky experience is extraordinary)

Cost: Free to visit the lake; observatory tours from $55

---

6. Cromwell & the Gibbston Valley Wineries

Distance: 60km / 45 minutes Difficulty: Easy Best for: Wine lovers, foodies, cyclists

The Gibbston Valley on the Kawarau Gorge road is Central Otago's wine heartland — and some of the best Pinot Noir in the world comes from here. The old railway trail through the gorge has been converted into the Queenstown Trail, perfect for cycling. Cromwell itself has a lovely historic precinct on the lake.

Activities: Wine tasting ($15–$30 per tasting), Queenstown Trail cycling, Cromwell Heritage Precinct

7. Te Anau (The Gateway to Fiordland)

Distance: 175km / 2 hours Difficulty: Easy Best for: Those doing Milford Sound self-drive, glowworm cave visitors

Te Anau is the nearest town to Milford Sound and the gateway to Fiordland National Park. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are excellent. For Milford Sound self-drivers, staying in Te Anau the night before cuts the morning drive significantly.

Activities: Glowworm Caves ($85), Lake Te Anau kayaking, Milford Road drive

---

8. Queenstown to Invercargill (The Serious Road Trip)

Distance: 190km / 2.5 hours Difficulty: Easy but long day Best for: Those continuing south or wanting Southland scenery

Invercargill itself isn't the draw — the road south through the Kingston Flyer route and past the Hokonui Hills is classic New Zealand South Island landscape. Stewart Island day trips (via ferry from Bluff) are possible but very long.

Day Trip Planning Tips

Milford Sound: book the tour, don't self-drive unless experienced. The road is spectacular but the distances are significant and the coach experience (with commentary) adds a lot.

Combine Arrowtown with Gibbston Valley. Both are on the same road from Queenstown — a half-day covers both comfortably.

Crown Range for Wanaka, not SH6. The Crown Range road (via Cardrona) is 45 minutes shorter and far more scenic. Fine in all but severe winter conditions.

Start Milford Sound early. Coach tours depart 7–7:30am. The drive through Fiordland is best in morning light.
