Paragliding in Queenstown: Everything You Need to Know
Tandem paragliding over Lake Wakatipu — prices, operators, and what to expect
Paragliding in Queenstown is one of those experiences that surprises people. Unlike bungy jumping or skydiving, it's not terrifying — it's peaceful, beautiful, and accessible to almost anyone regardless of fitness or experience.
You launch from Bob's Peak (400m above Queenstown) on a tandem glider with a qualified instructor, and spend 10–15 minutes soaring over Lake Wakatipu with the entire Queenstown basin spread below you.
Here's everything you need to know.
How Tandem Paragliding Works
Tandem paragliding means you fly with a qualified pilot — you don't need any training or experience. The pilot controls everything; your job is to enjoy the view.
The process: 1. Meet at the Skyline Gondola base and ride up to Bob's Peak (gondola included in most packages) 2. Brief 5-minute safety and positioning briefing 3. Run a few steps down the launch ramp — you're airborne immediately 4. 10–20 minutes soaring over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu 5. Gentle landing on the Queenstown waterfront (most operators land near the lake)

What's It Actually Like?
The launch: You run 3–4 steps downhill and then you're simply... floating. There's no drop, no freefall. The transition from running to flying is surprisingly smooth.
In the air: Quiet. Peaceful. You're sitting in a harness that feels like a comfortable seat, with the instructor behind you. The view of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and the town below is extraordinary. Most people are grinning from the moment they launch.
Thermals and manoeuvres: Depending on conditions, the pilot may perform gentle spirals or turns to gain height and extend the flight. It can feel slightly rollercoaster-like but nothing intense.
The landing: Smooth — you walk the last few steps as the glider settles. Most landings are on the Queenstown waterfront, which means you finish right in town.
Is It Safe?
Tandem paragliding is one of the safer adventure activities — there's no freefall, the equipment is rigorously maintained, and you're flying with a qualified instructor. In Queenstown, all operators must hold Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) certification.
Weather dependency: Flights are highly weather-dependent. Strong winds or poor visibility cancel flights (and reputable operators will offer a full refund or reschedule). Don't book for your last day if you have a hard flight to catch.
Paragliding vs Skydiving vs Helicopter
| | Paragliding | Skydiving | Helicopter | |--|--|--|--| | **Adrenaline** | Low–medium | Very high | Low | | **Duration** | 10–20 min | 60 sec freefall | 15–60 min | | **Price** | $229–$299 | $299–$399 | $250–$895 | | **Age minimum** | 5 years | 12 years | None | | **Scare factor** | Low | High | Very low | | **Best for** | Views, peace | Maximum thrill | Photography |
Verdict: Paragliding is the most accessible aerial experience in Queenstown — ideal for those who want a real adventure without the intensity of skydiving. The views are comparable to a helicopter flight at a lower price point.
Practical Tips
Book in advance but be flexible. Weather can cancel flights. Book early in your trip so you have buffer days.
Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes. You'll run a few steps on launch — sandals/jandals don't work.
Photos and video are worth it. The view from the glider is spectacular — a helmet-mounted camera captures things a ground-level photo never could. Usually $50–$80 extra.
Morning vs afternoon: Morning flights (before 11am) often have calmer conditions. Afternoon can be more thermic (turbulent) but some pilots prefer it for longer flights.
