Queenstown Packing List 2026: What to Bring for Every Season
The definitive packing guide — summer, autumn, winter, and spring
Queenstown sits in a mountain basin with genuinely unpredictable weather. The saying 'four seasons in one day' is barely an exaggeration here — especially in shoulder seasons. Packing right makes a huge difference to your experience.
This guide covers what to bring for each season, plus the year-round essentials.
Year-Round Essentials (Every Visit)
Clothing - **Waterproof rain jacket** — non-negotiable. Even in summer, Queenstown can get afternoon showers. Milford Sound requires it year-round. - **Mid-layer fleece or down jacket** — temperatures drop significantly once the sun sets, even in summer - **Layering base** — breathable synthetic or merino base layer for activity days - **Comfortable walking shoes** — most activities involve some walking. Trainers are fine; trail runners are better - **Casual clothes for town** — Queenstown is a resort town. Smart-casual is fine for restaurants; you don't need anything formal
Gear - **Sunscreen SPF50+** — UV is intense at altitude. The thin air filters less UV than at sea level - **Sunglasses** — essential on the lake in summer - **Reusable water bottle** — Queenstown's tap water is excellent; refill everywhere - **Power bank** — you'll be using your camera/phone constantly - **Small daypack** (20–30L) — for day hikes, activity days, carrying a jacket
Documents & Essentials - Passport (for visa-on-arrival countries) - Travel insurance documents (emergency number saved to phone) - Credit/debit card — Queenstown is virtually cashless; contactless payments everywhere - NZ driver's licence or international equivalent (if driving)

Summer Packing List (December–February)
Queenstown summers are warm (18–23°C) with long days (sunset after 9:30pm) but afternoon thunderstorms are possible.
Add to year-round essentials: - Light t-shirts and shorts (3–4 of each) - Swimwear — Lake Wakatipu and Lake Hayes are swimmable in summer - Sun hat — UV is intense, especially on the water - Light linen or cotton layer for evenings - Sandals for town (but not for activities)
Leave at home: Heavy winter gear, thermals, thick socks
---
Autumn Packing List (March–May)
Autumn in Queenstown is beautiful — warm days, cool nights, stunning foliage. March is still warm; May is cold.
Add to year-round essentials: - Light down jacket (packable) for evenings - Jeans or warm trousers for evenings - Merino wool t-shirts (regulates temperature well in changing conditions) - Warm beanie for Milford Sound or higher altitude walks
March–April: Still warm enough for t-shirts in the sun; jacket needed after 5pm May: Treat like early winter — thermals useful
---
Winter Packing List (June–August)
Queenstown winters are cold (-2°C overnight, 8–10°C days) with potential snow in town. Ski days require specific gear.
Essential winter layers: - Thermal base layer (top and bottom) — wool or synthetic - Mid-layer fleece or down jacket - Heavy waterproof outer jacket (3-in-1 works well) - Waterproof trousers or ski pants - Wool socks (2–3 pairs) - Warm hat, gloves, neck gaiter/scarf - Waterproof boots with grip (town streets can be icy)
For skiing specifically: - Most ski hire in Queenstown includes boots, skis, and poles - Rent helmet, goggles, and outerwear from hire shops (cheaper than buying) - Bring your own gloves and thermal base layers — rental base layers are not great - Ski socks (thicker than regular socks, padded at shin)
Leave at home: Summer clothes (won't need them)
---
Spring Packing List (September–November)
Spring is highly variable — warm sunny days possible alongside cold snaps and late snow.
Add to year-round essentials: - Down jacket (days can turn cold quickly) - Thermals (just in case — pack light ones) - Waterproof boots or trail runners - Layers that can be added/removed easily throughout the day
September: Treat like late winter — ski season still running October–November: Pack for all conditions; temperature is unpredictable
---
Activity-Specific Gear
Milford Sound: Waterproof jacket (essential), warm mid-layer (even in summer), non-slip shoes Bungy jumping: Comfortable clothing, secure shoes (no jandals), hair tied back Jet boating: Waterproof jacket (front seats get very wet), secure shoes Hiking: Trail runners or hiking boots, daypack, snacks, water, sun protection Wine touring: Smart-casual clothing — nothing too casual for vineyard restaurants
---
What to Buy in Queenstown vs Bring From Home
Buy in Queenstown: Sunscreen, insect repellent, basic medications, snacks, cheap rain poncho if you forgot your jacket
Definitely bring from home: Quality rain jacket, thermal base layers, good walking shoes — these are expensive in Queenstown and you'll regret not having them
Don't bother bringing: Ski gear — hire it in Queenstown. Formal clothes — Queenstown doesn't require them.
