Queenstown Weather: Month-by-Month Guide for 2026

What to expect every month — temperatures, rainfall, and what to pack

17 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown sits in a mountain basin at 310m above sea level. The weather is driven by the Southern Alps to the west and the high country to the north — which means it's genuinely unpredictable, but also extremely varied and dramatic.

Here's what to expect every month.

Queenstown Weather by Month

January (Summer — Peak Season)

Average high: 23°C | Average low: 10°C Rainfall: 55mm (relatively dry) Sunshine hours: 220+

January is Queenstown's warmest month. Long days (sunset after 9:30pm), warm lake temperatures (around 18°C), and generally settled weather. Perfect for outdoor activities.

What to pack: Light clothing, sunscreen, layers for evening (temperatures drop once the sun sets), light rain jacket.

Activities: All outdoor activities in full swing. Lake swimming at Frankton Beach. Sunsets spectacular.

---

February (Summer — Still Excellent)

Average high: 23°C | Average low: 10°C Rainfall: 48mm

February is often slightly drier than January. The crowds are still high (school holidays end early February) but the weather is excellent. Lake temperatures peak.

---

March (Autumn Begins — Underrated)

Average high: 19°C | Average low: 7°C Rainfall: 60mm

March is one of Queenstown's best months. Crowds thin, accommodation prices drop, and the first autumn colours appear on the trees around Arrowtown and Lake Hayes. Warm days are still common. A great time for adventure activities without the summer crowds.

---

April (Peak Autumn — Beautiful)

Average high: 15°C | Average low: 4°C Rainfall: 65mm

April is spectacular. The Arrowtown autumn colours are at their peak (usually mid-to-late April) — the avenue of trees on Buckingham Street turns gold and red. Lake reflections on calm mornings are extraordinary. Cooler but still comfortable for most activities.

Highlight: Arrowtown Autumn Festival (usually third week of April).

---

May (Late Autumn — Getting Cold)

Average high: 11°C | Average low: 1°C Rainfall: 65mm

May sees significant cooling. Frost is possible overnight. The mountains start getting their snow caps. Good for those who want Queenstown without any crowds — accommodation is cheapest this month.

---

June (Early Winter — Ski Season Starts)

Average high: 8°C | Average low: -1°C Rainfall: 45mm (drier)

June marks the start of ski season. Coronet Peak usually opens by mid-June. Snow in town is possible but not guaranteed. The Winter Festival typically falls in late June — one of the best events on the Queenstown calendar.

What to pack: Proper winter clothing. Thermals, down jacket, waterproof outer layer, gloves, wool hat.

---

July (Peak Winter — Best Snow)

Average high: 8°C | Average low: -2°C Rainfall: 40mm

July is peak ski season and Queenstown's busiest winter month. Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are typically at their best. School holidays (mid-July) bring the biggest crowds. Book accommodation and lift passes well in advance.

---

August (Winter Continues — Good Snow)

Average high: 10°C | Average low: -1°C Rainfall: 45mm

August is slightly warmer than July with slightly longer days. Good snow conditions continue. Slightly quieter than July after school holidays end.

---

September (Spring — Shoulder Season)

Average high: 13°C | Average low: 1°C Rainfall: 55mm

Ski season continues into September (sometimes October). Warmer days return. Spring wildflowers appear in the lower valleys. A genuinely underrated time to visit — good snow, warming weather, reasonable prices.

---

October (Spring — Transition)

Average high: 17°C | Average low: 4°C Rainfall: 65mm

October is unpredictable — snow is still possible but warm days return. Ski fields may or may not still be open (check conditions). The lake and valley are beautiful in spring green.

---

November (Late Spring — Good Value)

Average high: 20°C | Average low: 7°C Rainfall: 65mm

November is an excellent shoulder month — warm enough for outdoor activities, less crowded than summer, and good accommodation rates. The Queenstown Marathon is usually held in November (great atmosphere).

---

December (Early Summer — Busy)

Average high: 22°C | Average low: 9°C Rainfall: 65mm

Christmas and New Year bring Queenstown's biggest crowds. Book everything far in advance. The weather is excellent — long days, warm temperatures, settled conditions.
