Central Otago Wine Guide: Queenstown's Wine Country

How the world's southernmost wine region became famous for Pinot Noir

7 March 2026 Queenstown

Central Otago is the world's southernmost wine region, and it's punching well above its weight. The extreme continental climate — hot dry summers, cold winters, huge diurnal temperature shifts — produces Pinot Noir of exceptional concentration and elegance. If you drink wine, this is one of the world's great wine destinations.

The Region

Central Otago is not one valley but several sub-regions, each with its own character:

Gibbston Valley — 'Valley of the Vines', the coolest and highest sub-region. Classic spicy, lighter-bodied Pinots. Most accessible from Queenstown (30 minutes). Many wineries have caves carved directly into the schist rock.

Bannockburn — Warmer, producing richer, fuller-bodied Pinots. Home to some of the region's most critically acclaimed producers.

Cromwell Basin — The largest and most productive area. High-quality Pinot alongside excellent Riesling and Pinot Gris.

Wanaka — Cooler, with some elegant, restrained Pinots from a handful of boutique producers.

Wineries Worth Visiting

Gibbston Valley Winery The region's most established cellar door, with a remarkable cave system carved into the schist behind the vines. Wine tours into the cave are genuinely excellent. The cheesery next door pairs aged local cheeses with the wines. 45-minute drive from Queenstown.

Amisfield Winery Widely considered one of the region's best producers. The cellar door and restaurant (near Arrowtown) are exceptional — the 'Trust the Chef' lunch with matched wines is unmissable. Book well ahead.

Mt Difficulty Wines Bannockburn cellar door with panoramic views across the Cromwell Basin to the Remarkables. Famous for their Roaring Meg Pinot Gris and the estate Pinot Noir. The restaurant is consistently excellent.

Peregrine Wines Famous for its extraordinary wing-shaped cellar door roof near Cromwell. The wines are excellent across the range — especially the Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Architecture alone is worth the drive.

Olssens of Bannockburn Boutique, family-run, and producing some of the most complex Pinots in the region. Less well-known than the larger producers; absolutely worth seeking out.

Organised Wine Tours from Queenstown

Several operators run wine tours from Queenstown, handling transport and winery bookings:

Appellation Wine Tours — Small-group, focused tasting experiences with a genuine educational element. Well-regarded.

Nomad Safaris Wine Tours — Off-road 4WD access to wineries in the high country, combined with Central Otago landscape. Unique experience.

Queenstown Wine Trail — Self-guided driving trail with maps and bookings available from the i-SITE.

Tours typically run half-day (Gibbston Valley only) or full-day (Gibbston + Bannockburn/Cromwell). Prices NZD $120-250 per person including tastings; transport essential.

What to Drink

Pinot Noir — The star. Central Otago Pinot ranges from light and spicy (Gibbston) to rich and concentrated (Bannockburn). Most serious producers make single-vineyard wines at premium price points.

Pinot Gris — Often overlooked but excellent. Central Otago Pinot Gris tends toward richer, slightly off-dry styles with stone fruit character.

Riesling — Taut, high-acid, age-worthy. The region makes excellent dry and off-dry Riesling that rarely gets the attention it deserves.

Rosé — Light, dry, salmon-pink. Perfect with the region's stone-fruit character showing through.

Pairing with Food

The region's produce is extraordinary: merino lamb, venison, salmon from the Clutha River, stone fruit (cherries, apricots, peaches) from Cromwell, and exceptional artisan cheeses. The classic pairing is Pinot Noir with Central Otago lamb. For restaurant experiences, Amisfield and Mt Difficulty both have exceptional menus built around the local produce.

Buying Wine to Take Home

All major wineries ship internationally. If you find something you love at a cellar door, ask about shipping — most have robust export systems. Airport duty-free stocks Central Otago wines but at premium prices and limited selection.
