Queenstown with Kids: The Best Family Activities & Tips

Adventure capital for all ages — here's how to do it with children in tow

11 February 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown's identity as the 'adventure capital of the world' can make parents nervous. Will there be anything for the kids? Can you actually enjoy it with a 6-year-old in tow?

The answer is an emphatic yes. Queenstown is genuinely excellent for families — the scenery is jaw-dropping, there's a huge range of age-appropriate activities, and the compact town centre makes getting around with kids easy.

Age-Appropriate Activities

For All Ages (including toddlers)

Queenstown Gardens — Free lakefront park with playgrounds, frisbee golf, and wide open spaces. Kids can run freely while adults decompress. Perfect for an hour or two.

Skyline Gondola — The gondola ride to the top of Bob's Peak is genuinely thrilling for children. At the top: a luge track (minimum age 3 with an adult), mini golf, and incredible views. Budget a half-day.

Steamer Wharf & Waterfront — Walk the lakefront, feed the ducks, and grab ice cream. The TSS Earnslaw steamship runs cruises from the wharf — kids love the old coal-fired engines.

Arrowtown — 20 minutes from Queenstown, this perfectly preserved gold rush town has a fantastic interactive gold panning experience (kids can genuinely find flecks of gold in the river). The Chinese Settlement is interesting for older kids.

Ages 5 and up

Luge at Skyline — Kids from about 5 can ride the luge on their own (adults accompany younger children). Multiple runs on two different tracks. Budget for more tickets than you think you'll need.

Shotover Jet — The famous jet boat is suitable for kids aged 3+ (check current minimums). The 360-degree spins are terrifying and wonderful. Kids absolutely love it.

AJ Hackett's Bungy Swing — While the bungy has a minimum weight/age requirement, the Swing at Nevis (and at the Kawarau Bridge site) has more accessible options. Check ages before booking.

Ages 8 and up

White Water Rafting (Grade 3) — The Shotover River has Grade 3 sections suitable for kids with some adventure in them. Grade 5 is adult-only.

Horse Trekking — Multiple operators run guided horse treks through the stunning Queenstown landscape. Great for kids who love animals.

Onsen Hot Pools — After active days, the private outdoor hot tubs at Onsen are a family favourite. Book in advance.

Practical Tips for Families

Stay near the lake. The central waterfront area keeps everything walkable, avoiding multiple car trips each day.

Book activities in advance. This is critical in peak season (December–January, July). The Shotover Jet in particular sells out days ahead.

Embrace the nap. Young children may struggle with full-day itineraries. Build in downtime — the waterfront is beautiful in the afternoon.

Weather check daily. Queenstown weather changes fast. Have a rainy-day backup (bowling at Downtown Queenstown, the Skyline Gondola is great in mist, Arrowtown Museum).

Don't try to do too much. Two great activities a day is plenty with young kids. The view from anywhere is its own activity.

Where to Eat with Kids

Queenstown is very family-friendly dining-wise. Fergburger (the famous burger institution) is reliably fast and good. The Lakehouse has a kids menu and outdoor seating. Vudu Café for morning teas. Most restaurants welcome children without fuss.

Getting Around

A rental car gives you maximum flexibility and is worth it for family trips. Parking is available at most attractions. Alternatively, the town is compact enough that you can walk most of the waterfront area with a buggy.
