Skydiving in Queenstown: Everything You Need to Know
Freefalling over the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu — the world's most scenic skydive
Skydiving over Queenstown is one of those bucket-list experiences that actually lives up to the hype. The combination of a 45-second freefall and a 5-minute parachute ride over Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and the surrounding fiordland makes it one of the most visually spectacular skydives on Earth.
The View
This is what sets Queenstown apart. From 15,000 feet you can see: - Lake Wakatipu stretching to the horizon, silver in the morning light - The jagged Remarkables range directly in front of you - Coronet Peak and the ski fields - The Crown Range and Cardrona Valley - On clear days: the fiords in the distance
No other skydive destination in the world combines all of this in one view. It's the reason people fly specifically to Queenstown to do their first (or twentieth) jump.
The Operators
NZONE Skydive — Queenstown's original skydive operator, established 1990. Drop zone is at Queenstown Airport. Experienced team, competitive prices, strong safety record.
Skydive Queenstown (Southern Lakes Skydiving) — The other main operator, also departing from Queenstown Airport area. Similar quality and prices.
Both are licensed and regularly inspected by New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority. New Zealand has excellent adventure tourism safety regulations.
Altitudes & Prices (approximate 2026)
| Altitude | Freefall Time | Approx. Price | |----------|---------------|---------------| | 9,000ft | 20 seconds | NZD $229-259 | | 12,000ft | 45 seconds | NZD $299-339 | | 15,000ft | 60+ seconds | NZD $349-399 | | 16,500ft | 75 seconds | NZD $379-429 |
Recommendation: The 15,000ft jump is the sweet spot. You get the full view and enough freefall to actually enjoy the sensation. The 9,000ft jump is over very quickly.
Photos and video add NZD $100-150 but are worth it — you'll want the evidence.
What the Experience Is Actually Like
Pre-jump: Arrive at the drop zone 30-45 minutes before. Watch a brief safety briefing video. Get fitted with your harness and introduced to your tandem instructor. They attach you to their chest via 4 steel clips.
The plane ride up: 15-20 minutes. It gets cold at altitude. The views start getting spectacular from 5,000ft.
The door opens: The moment that separates talkers from jumpers. Your instructor pushes you to the edge. You look down at Queenstown far below. Everything slows down.
Freefall: Loud, cold, overwhelming. You're moving at 200km/h through thin air. The view is incomprehensible. Your brain takes 20-30 seconds to catch up with what's happening.
Parachute deploys: Sudden silence. You float. The view is unbelievable. Your instructor might do some turns. You have 5-8 minutes to look at everything.
Landing: Smooth, feet first, usually a gentle slide. Then your legs go wobbly.
Requirements
- ✓Minimum age: 12 years (with parental consent in some cases; check with operator)
- ✓Maximum weight: Around 100kg (varies by operator)
- ✓Health: No heart conditions, recent surgery, or back problems. Pregnant women cannot jump.
- ✓Alcohol: You will be refused if you've been drinking.
Booking Tips
- ✓Book in advance in peak season (December–February, July school holidays). Spaces fill, and good weather windows get snapped up.
- ✓Book the first slot of the day. Morning typically has the clearest weather and best light.
- ✓Check weather policies. Most operators offer free rescheduling if weather cancels your jump.
- ✓Combine with the bungy. NZONE has packages with AJ Hackett for both on the same day. Popular and good value.
