South Island Road Trip from Queenstown: 7-Day Itinerary

Queenstown to Christchurch via the best of the South Island

13 March 2026 Queenstown

The South Island of New Zealand is made for road trips. Two lanes, extraordinary scenery every hour, and a culture that genuinely values the slow travel approach. The classic route from Queenstown to Christchurch (or vice versa) covers fjords, glaciers, vineyards, lakes, and mountains — all within 600km.

Day 1: Queenstown (base) Fly into Queenstown. Settle in, walk the lakefront, and get your bearings. Do one afternoon activity — the Skyline Gondola is perfect for an overview of the landscape you'll be driving through. Dinner at Rata or Botswana Butchery. Early night.

Day 2: Queenstown → Te Anau (2 hours) Drive SH6 south through Kingston and Lumsden to Te Anau. Stop at the Hokonui Moonshine Museum in Gore if you're passing through (seriously). Arrive Te Anau by noon. Explore the lakefront, check into your accommodation. **Afternoon:** Te Anau Glowworm Caves (book in advance). Dinner at the Redcliff Restaurant.

Day 3: Milford Sound day trip (from Te Anau) Leave Te Anau by 7am. The 120km drive to Milford Sound is the day's main event — stop at the Mirror Lakes, pull over at every viewpoint, walk through the Homer Tunnel on foot if you want (there's a pedestrian path). Arrive before 10am for the first cruise. Return to Te Anau by evening.

Day 4: Te Anau → Wanaka (via Crown Range) (3 hours) Drive back through Queenstown (stop for coffee and to pick up anything you forgot), then continue over the Crown Range to Wanaka. The Crown Range road is the highest sealed main road in NZ — spectacular in good weather. **Afternoon in Wanaka:** Walk to That Tree, explore the town. Dinner at Francesca's.

Day 5: Wanaka (and the Rob Roy Glacier) Full day in Wanaka. **Morning:** Rob Roy Glacier Track (4-5 hours return) — one of New Zealand's finest accessible glacier walks. **Afternoon:** Cardrona Distillery for whisky/gin tasting on the way back. Relax at the lake edge. Optional: Puzzling World for the absurdist afternoon laugh.

Day 6: Wanaka → Lake Tekapo (2.5 hours via Twizel) Drive north on SH8 through the Mackenzie Basin. Stop at Lake Pukaki (turquoise, with Mount Cook behind it) and at the Mount Cook Visitor Centre if time allows. Continue to Lake Tekapo. **Afternoon:** Church of the Good Shepherd and lake walk. **Evening:** Earth & Sky stargazing tour (book ahead — it's worth it). Stay in Tekapo overnight for the dark skies.

Day 7: Lake Tekapo → Christchurch (3 hours) Morning walk up Mount John summit track. Drive north on SH8/SH1 to Christchurch through the Canterbury Plains — flat agricultural land, dramatic contrast to the last 6 days of mountains. Return your rental car at Christchurch Airport.

Route Overview

``` Queenstown → Te Anau (2h) → Milford Sound (day trip, 2.5h each way) → Wanaka (3h) → Twizel/Pukaki → Tekapo (2.5h) → Christchurch (3h) Total driving: ~15 hours spread over 7 days ```
Practical Notes
Car rental: One-way rentals from Queenstown to Christchurch. Budget extra for the one-way fee (typically NZD $50-150). Book well in advance in summer.
Fuel: Fill up in every major town. Don't assume the next place will have a petrol station.
Accommodation: Book all accommodation at least 2-3 weeks ahead in summer (December–February) and July. Te Anau, Milford, and Tekapo fill fast.
Weather: Check MetService.com every morning for mountain road conditions. The Homer Tunnel occasionally closes; Milford Sound can be foggy. The Crown Range has a snow advisory in winter.
Timing: This itinerary works any time of year. Summer has the longest days; autumn has the best colours; winter adds snow and dramatic skies.
