Milford Sound is dramatic in every season. Rain creates hundreds of waterfalls, winter brings snow-capped peaks, and summer offers the warmest cruising conditions. There's no bad time to visit.

Rainfall

Milford Sound receives about 6,813mm of rain annually — one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth. It rains approximately 182 days per year. Rainy days are actually a highlight, as hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascade from the cliff faces.

Summer (December–February)

Warmest temperatures (10–18°C), longest days, and the calmest water conditions. Peak season with more visitors. Dolphins and penguins are frequently spotted. Book cruises well in advance.

Winter (June–August)

Cooler temperatures (3–10°C) with snow-capped peaks creating dramatic scenery. Fewer visitors and a more peaceful atmosphere. The Milford Road may close temporarily due to avalanche risk — check conditions before travelling.

Wildlife Year-Round

Bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and Fiordland crested penguins call Milford Sound home. Seals are visible year-round on Seal Rock. Dolphins are most active in warmer months. Penguins are best spotted July–November.
