Summer in Milford Sound
Weather
Mildest temperatures of the year with frequent rain. Long daylight hours.
Summer is Milford Sound's peak season, and for good reason. The days are long, the temperatures are at their mildest, and the full range of activities — cruises, kayaking, diving, and hiking — are all operating at maximum capacity.
The drive from Queenstown is at its easiest in summer, with no avalanche risk and dry road conditions. The scenic stops along the Milford Road — Mirror Lakes, Lake Gunn, The Chasm — are all at their most accessible, making the journey a highlight in itself.
Wildlife is particularly active in summer. Bottlenose dolphins are frequently spotted in the fiord, fur seals bask on the rocks at Seal Point, and Fiordland crested penguins can sometimes be seen near the fiord entrance.
Kayaking is at its best in summer — calmer waters and warmer temperatures make paddling beneath the towering cliffs an unforgettable experience. Overnight cruises are also popular, allowing you to fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest and wake to morning mist rising from the fiord.
The main downside of summer is crowds. Peak season means more tour buses, fuller cruises, and the need to book well in advance. If possible, take an early morning or late afternoon cruise to avoid the midday rush.
Rain remains a constant companion regardless of season — Milford averages 182 rain days per year. But summer rain tends to be lighter and shorter, and the waterfalls that appear after every shower are part of what makes the fiord so spectacular.
