Getting There
By Air
Queenstown Airport (ZQN) is the main gateway to the region. It receives direct flights from Auckland (1h 50m), Wellington (1h 40m), Christchurch (1h 10m), and several Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
Air New Zealand and Jetstar are the main domestic carriers. The airport is compact and just 8km (15–20 minutes) from Queenstown CBD.
By Car
Driving to Queenstown is a spectacular experience in itself. Major routes include:
- ✓Christchurch to Queenstown — approximately 6 hours via SH1 and SH8 through the Lindis Pass
- ✓Dunedin to Queenstown — approximately 3.5 hours via SH8 through the Kawarau Gorge
- ✓Invercargill to Queenstown — approximately 2.5 hours via SH6 through Kingston
- ✓Wanaka to Queenstown — approximately 1 hour via the Crown Range or 1.5 hours via SH6
Airport Transfers

Getting Around
On Foot
Queenstown CBD is highly walkable. Most restaurants, bars, and tour departure points are within a 10-minute walk of each other. The lakefront promenade and Queenstown Gardens are perfect for exploring on foot.
Tour Pickups
Most major tour operators offer complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off within central Queenstown and Frankton. This includes Milford Sound day trips, bungy, jet boating, wine tours, and scenic flights. No car needed for these.
Rental Car
A car gives you the freedom to explore Arrowtown, Glenorchy, the road to Milford Sound, and the Crown Range to Wanaka at your own pace. Essential for the 7-Day Southern Explorer itinerary. Book ahead in peak season.
Public Transport
Orbus public buses connect Queenstown CBD, Frankton, Arrowtown, and the airport. Fares are low ($2 with a Bee Card) and routes are reliable. Useful for reaching Frankton shopping area and Arrowtown without a car.
Taxis & Rideshare
Taxis and rideshare options are available for airport transfers and late-night returns. A taxi from the airport to CBD costs approximately $35–45 NZD.
Where to Stay
Queenstown CBD
Walking distance to restaurants, bars, and lake. Most convenient for first-timers. Higher prices but unbeatable location.
Best for: Walkability, nightlife, first-time visitors
Frankton
Near the airport and Remarkables Park shopping. More affordable than CBD. 10-minute drive or bus to town.
Best for: Families, budget-conscious, early flights
Arrowtown
Charming heritage village, 20 minutes from Queenstown. Quieter atmosphere with excellent restaurants. Boutique stays.
Best for: Couples, heritage lovers, autumn visits
Fernhill / Sunshine Bay
Elevated suburbs above Queenstown with lake and mountain views. Short drive to CBD. Mix of hotels and holiday homes.
Best for: Views, privacy, mid-range budget
