Queenstown in Spring: What to Do in September, October & November

The underrated shoulder season — fewer crowds, lower prices, and beautiful scenery

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Spring (September–November) is Queenstown's quietest season — and arguably its most underrated. You get snow on the mountains, warming days, spring wildflowers, and accommodation prices 20–40% below summer peaks.

What to Expect

September - **Weather:** 6–13°C. Still cold, especially mornings. Snow on the mountains. - **Skiing:** Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables still open (usually until late September/early October). Spring skiing is excellent — longer days, corn snow. - **Crowds:** Very quiet. This is Queenstown's lowest-traffic month. - **Prices:** Lowest of the year for accommodation.

October - **Weather:** 8–17°C. Warming rapidly. Spring rain possible. Unpredictable. - **Skiing:** Usually closed by mid-October (check conditions). - **Activity:** Most adventure activities resume full schedules. - **Scenery:** Spring green returns to the valley. Snow caps on mountains. Lake reflections are excellent on calm mornings.

November - **Weather:** 11–20°C. Genuinely pleasant. Long days returning. - **Events:** Queenstown Marathon (usually mid-November) brings great atmosphere. - **Crowds:** Still manageable. Picks up toward month's end as summer approaches. - **Hiking:** All major tracks open (Roys Peak opens October, Routeburn and Milford Tracks open late October).

Best Spring Activities

Skiing (September only) Spring skiing at Coronet Peak is excellent — warmer days, softer snow, and fewer crowds than peak July. Night skiing continues on Friday/Saturday evenings. Lift pass: $149.

Queenstown Trail Cycling The Queenstown Trail network (connecting Queenstown, Arrowtown, Gibbston Valley, and Lake Hayes) is perfect in spring — cool enough for comfortable cycling, scenery turning green. E-bike hire from $60/half day.

Milford Sound Milford Sound is spectacular in spring. Higher rainfall means more waterfalls. Cooler temperatures mean fewer crowds. The fiord in spring rain is atmospheric and dramatic.

Hiking Season Opens - **Queenstown Hill:** Open year-round, excellent in spring - **Ben Lomond:** Accessible from October - **Roys Peak (Wanaka):** Opens October (closed May–September for lambing) - **Routeburn Track:** Opens late October

Wine Season Starts The Gibbston Valley wineries are beautiful in spring — the vines are leafing out and the tasting rooms are uncrowded. A half-day wine tour is $120–$300.
